CHISEL@LUMS is a Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research lab at LUMS University focused on assistive technology. We design and build solutions that improve mental health, learning, and elderly care through human-centered design.
We are looking for a Data Scientist to join our team in Lahore. This is a unique role that balances academic research with practical system implementation, bridging the gap between theoretical modeling and real-world assistive tech applications.
The Role
As a Data Scientist at CHISEL, you will work at the intersection of Machine Learning and HCI. You will be responsible for both the 'brain' of our systems (modeling) and the 'body' (implementation), ensuring that our technical solutions are robust, scalable, and deeply user-centric.
Responsibilities
- Develop and optimize machine learning models for assistive technology applications.
- Implement data pipelines and integrate models into functional system prototypes.
- Collaborate with HCI researchers to translate user needs into technical specifications following the HCD lifecycle.
- Contribute to academic research, data analysis for user studies, and high-impact publications.
Requirements
- Python Mastery: Deep experience with ML frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow.
- Data Engineering: Ability to build and maintain SQL/NoSQL data pipelines.
- HCD Mindset: Familiarity with or interest in the Human-Centered Design lifecycle.
Nice to Haves
- Computer Vision: Experience with gesture recognition or accessibility-focused CV.
- Academic Writing: Prior experience with research publications or technical writing.
