That not all bugs are structural. I once spent hours debugging a logically perfect ETL pipeline only to realize the issue was temporal—a mismatch between event-time and processing-time. It taught me that in data systems, understanding the 'when' is just as critical as the 'how'.

I start by identifying bottlenecks in the data ingestion and freshness pipeline. Before looking at models or dashboards, I inspect latency, transformation layer efficiency, and the trade-offs between data consistency and speed. My goal is to ensure the system is making decisions on fresh reality, not stale data.

It's a trade-off between correctness and responsiveness. Event-time is the source of truth for analytics and reporting, ensuring late-arriving data doesn't distort historical reality. Processing-time is for operational triggers like fraud detection, where acting on the current system state is more critical than waiting for perfect synchronization. A mature architecture separates these layers to serve both needs.

I view 'intuition' as context-rich system knowledge. When a statistical signal conflicts with intuition, I follow a layered validation process: trust the signal as a detection of change, then verify it against business context (campaigns, deployments, upstream logs). The goal is to classify the event as a true anomaly, expected behavior, or a known change, rather than just reacting to a binary alert. This prevents both alert fatigue and silent failures.

I draw the line using a framework of risk, reversibility, and observability. A system should act autonomously when the risk is low, confidence is high, and the action is easily reversible (e.g., auto-scaling or reranking recommendations). It should 'flash a yellow light' when there is moderate risk or missing context, surfacing the issue for human interpretation. Finally, for high-consequence, low-reversibility actions like clinical interventions or financial transfers, the system should never act alone, as accountability and context are paramount. The ultimate deciding factor is 'expected regret'—if being wrong is catastrophic, a human must be in the loop.
